![]() ![]() Moses knew that if he gave the tablets while Israel danced around the Golden Calf, they’d merely trade the Calf’s emptiness for an equally empty sense of the tablets. Moses acted superbly in breaking the tablets… to teach that nothing has inherent sanctity….” And if had brought the tablets, it would be as if they were exchanging the calf for the tablets…. “‘Moses became angry and cast the tablets from his hands’ – meaning that there is no sanctity or divinity without the existence of the Creator. Meir Simcha HaKohen of Dvinsk (1843-1926), in Meshech Chochma, offers this teaching about breaking the tablets: The past crumbles into raw material to build the future. Old institutions can’t evolve with hearts and souls. Structures suitable for one era don’t serve another. Sometimes our buildings (physical and spiritual) fall. ![]() “As above, so below”: as in the cosmos, so too for us. Spiritually, we’re all pieces of the Infinite, and shattered shards surround us waiting for us to lift them to light. Physically, we’re all stardust, recycled remnants of faraway stars that exploded, fusing the elements we know on Earth. In this creation story, the world is sparks of light concealed by shards of the primordial breaking.Įverything we know is a product of breaking. G!d began creation anew, from shards of that cosmic shattering. G!d created vessels to hold infinite light, but they shattered, unable to hold Infinity. In Isaac Luria ’s kabbalistic description of creation, breaking is how G!d created the universe. Some principles are paramount above all, even what we believe comes from G!d’s own Self.īreaking is the way of the world. ![]() Why? Precisely to teach that nothing, not even G!d’s tablets, or whatever we imagine to be holy, is too precious to break for the sake of core principle. But those tablets are exactly what Moses breaks, and G!d applauds. If Jewish tradition would hold anything to be too important to break (“too big to fail”), then surely it’d be the tablets of the Ten Commandments. ![]() We might imagine that some things are too important to break. Sometimes behaviors, structures and things must break so new ones can arise. We learn a key lesson: sometimes things must break. Talmud records G!d to say, in essence, “More power to you!” ( Yevamot 6a ). Surprisingly, G!d isn’t upset that Moses shatters the tablets. They build a Golden Calf, point to it and celebrate: “This is your god, Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!” Moses sees the Golden Calf and shatters the two stone tablets on it ( Exodus 32:19 ). Sinai for 40 days, the people get nervous that he’ll never return. This week’s paresha ( Ki Tisa ) redirects us with two related teachings: (1) nothing is too important to break, even purposefully and (2) spiritual builders mustn’t confuse building with purpose, lest spiritual life itself become an idol.Īfter chapters of instruction to build the Mishkan, the story gets interrupted by the Golden Calf. Spiritual builders sometimes so deeply invest in their call to build that they can forget what that call is really about. But the log says different and actually comparing this chart to several others indicates that Garmin may have done the best job of representing the underlying NOAA data for this particular spot. In fact, though he took responsibility in the proper captain fashion, he kinda sorta thought the Garmin had misguided him about the “Obs rep” and the correct side to leave that bouy 68a. After running over the apparently sunken “crib” he’d had to limp the boat back to the ramp with a badly damaged lower unit and hadn’t investigated the track detail. I was with Anon when he first saw this track zoomed in on his plotter and then even better detailed on my big PC screen. Clicking once on that particular track point got Homeport to put that orange circle mark on the chart spot, clicking twice zoomed into the tragic image below. Methinks it was all that navigational focus at speed that largely accounts for what went wrong at track point #1,867, when Anon was within sight of the launch ramp and running a little bit further up river to burn the gas out his outboard. So Anon drove some 64 nm of complex river (the skinny Sasanoa is famous for its whirlpools!), and his Garmin tracked every bit of it in some detail, as you can see in the bottom middle window. Clicking on Active Log #16 would show the 25 nm he’d run down river before lunching in Bath. At any rate, I’ve clicked on Anon’s last automatically made Active Log (track) and Homeport has zoomed out to show part of a neat trip he took down and back up the Kennebec and Sasanoa Rivers from the launch ramp in Hallowell. Note that I’ve also opened the 5212 base map from the SD card you can see under Devices (I also have the Vision SD card in the PC, and can switch to that added cartography detail if desired). Thus all the data in the lower left window is his. At upper left on the screen you can see that I’ve opened the user file that we downloaded off his Garmin and that I imported into my Homeport Library. We’ll call him Anon so the Google won’t forever pin this very uncharacteristic mistake to his real name. ![]() Click to enlarge the screen above and I’ll explain after the break… But today’s look at some deeper Homeport features gets the benefit of a friend’s embarrassing navigation error. I stowed away some memorable tracks, quickly cleaned up some extraneous waypoints (careful with that track-to-route feature), polished some favorite routes, and then overwrote the user data on the 5212 with a much more useful set. I was able to easily copy the 5212’s embedded charts - plus the mess of tracks, routes, and waypoints I put on it last season - and then review/manage all on my home computer. I can’t imagine why anyone with a Garmin plotter, a Windows PC, and a bit of ability to use both wouldn’t find Garmin Homeport more than worth the $30 charge. ![]() ![]() Nikon Realtree Outdoors Binoculars come with fold-down rubber eyecups, precisely cut lens and prism glass for clarity, and in addition features multicoated lenses for maximum light. ![]() Thanks Sean for taking the time to write such a detailed reply □ and I would think seriously about getting into Affinity, watch some youtube videos of tutorials - Serif Affinity have their own channel As an Admin I should do this more often :>( alas times a change and folks move on! MY RECOMMENDATION would be snap up the Serif photoPlus X8 if it's reduced enough say £20.00. I shall check back if I remember to see if you have made any decisions. I am a sucker for Facebook and that takes up a load of time that Flickr used to have sole use of. When I retire in 10 or so years I may well sit down and grasp what Affinity has to offer I know for a fact that the zoom quality is amazing -especially in the Designer version - I think we had a thread on here about it a few years ago, which may not be that far back actually because we very seldom come here anymore. I have not really had time to get used to using Affinity (either the Designer or the Photo, ) let alone the new beta Affinity Publisher, because for the little that I need regarding photo manipulation at the moment, it's way simpler for me to just jump into Windows from my Mac using Parallels and click open PhotoPlus X8, because I know the software since PhP2 or 3 and have grown up with each release. I bought into the Affinity Range straight away, because my main computers are all Macs nowadays, but Serif really did not miss a trick this time by actually devising a windows version (I was screaming at them for years to do a Mac version of the Serif Plus range) and for all in Tents with Porpoises Affinity is whooping Adobe Pah! right outta the water nowadays. ![]() I have PhotoPlus X8 and use it all the time along with DrawPlus X8, alas, this Serif Range seems to have been given the old heave ho now - but I recently snapped up PagePlus X9 so always say you don't know. My interest in photography started by accident really, when I started using photography alongside my creative writing ventures. This HNC is very business orientated though, so will be doing a lot more portraits this year. not a chance! I do take occasional portraits, but essentially it’s landscapes and macro photography that I like. Yea I enjoy LR better than PS, not planning on working as a wedding photographer or working with families. If you are going to be a photographer, portraits, families, weddings etc, you will need Lightroom. Thank you very much for taking time to help□Īlthough I have both LR and PS, I use LR probably over 99% of the time, I find it invaluable for raw files, I tended to take 50 or more group shots at a time with the same lighting, often flash and it was wonderful for spending 15 minutes adjusting one image and then synchronising across the other 49 in 20 seconds! With regards to the Photoplus X8, I’ve seen it direct from Serif and Amazon for about £20 quid, there are also the user guide paperback books floating around for a few quid. I learn better with a combo of print and pictures. Will most likely go for the Infinity photo and the new workbook, which looks really nice. If I need the full versions, I have access to Macs in college. I honestly couldn’t justify it whilst in full time education. I only require pretty basic editing (camera RAW or similar) if I am being honest, the full versions of both LR/PS would be over the top for me right now. Harry® Yes they do, but I won’t buy into this “CC” pay monthly nonsense. I have the last stand-alone versions of LR/PS, I don't like the concept of renting. I definitely feel I got my purchase price’s enjoyment reading through the supplement. Ruins of the Lost Realm straddles my line between “armchair book” and “table book” with excellence. It didn’t live up to my expectations, but my expectations were also very high. This adds to TOR’s sensation of being an in-world artifact, and definitely increases my pleasure reading through these books.Īnd overall, this is a good book. The sort of line art or sketch style chosen for this game’s interior illustrations meshes well with the page’s “paper” texture. My favorite piece is a Player-hero bargaining with a talking otter using shiny baubles. That said, the artwork really is excellent in the first two chapters of the book. As a gamemaster I enjoy being able to turn the book around, point, and say “That! You walk around the corner, and see that!” Considering the number of monsters featured in the book-such as the Beast of Angmar, and the Doom of Nenuiel-I wish there were a couple extra illustrations. The cartography is beautiful, and mostly easy to understand. While discussing the landmarks chapter, it’s also noteworthy that I was a little disappointed that section’s illustrations were nearly all location maps. Skimming back through Raven’s Purge, for Forbidden Lands, the “Events” section of each adventure site provided fuel to my imagination in the way “Schemes and Trouble” has not. Supplementary information in “Schemes and Trouble” to help integrate a landmark’s problems and antagonists into the themes, characters, and the Tale of Years presented in the book’s first half would give Ruins more structure. In this collection that formula is somewhat overused. A rumor, a monster, and a treasure is a time-honored formula for adventure. Several landmarks feel set up to be a treasure hunt, but without establishing broader consequences as in The Hobbit. ![]() The landmarks chapter has two basic weaknesses: too many similar themes, and lack of detail in the “Schemes and Trouble” section of most landmarks. I quite like their Forbidden Lands, which emphasizes exploration in the same way. This disappointed me because I feel this type of site-based adventure design is usually a strength for Free League. The front half of the book-describing Eriador, and the antagonists which threaten it-is very good, but the second half’s landmarks felt a bit underwritten. I had very high hopes for Ruins, considering the core rules’ superlative quality. Together, the core rules and Ruins provide a Loremaster-TOR’s term for a gamemaster-with a large LEGO set from which to build their own campaign. ![]() It’s intended to be used in combination with the “World” chapter of TOR, which also focuses upon history, characters, and conflicts within Eriador. Ruins describes the people of Eriador, plots which threaten them, and a collection of twelve “landmarks” for exploration during the game’s Adventuring Phase. The Shire of the Hobbits lies at its heart, with the Grey Havens along the western shore, and Elrond’s hidden home, Rivendell, in the foothills of the eastern mountains. This land was once the kingdom of Arnor, west of the Misty Mountains. ![]() Free League’s Ruins of the Lost Realm is a “sandbox” description of Eriador. Reminiscent of the “Red Book of Westmarch” described in Tolkien’s prologue to The Fellowship of the Ring, that volume’s illustration, graphic design, and rules design together presented a game which said to me, “here’s how to play stories which feel like Tolkien’s stories, but need not be derivative.” I love it, and anticipated follow-up releases from TOR’s Swedish publisher, Free League. The thick red leatherbound second edition of The One Ring (TOR) roleplaying game enchanted me the moment I opened the Kickstarter reward. ![]() |
